Summary

It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages。 England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east。 Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king。 Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns。

In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined。 A young boatbuilder's life is turned upside down when the only home he's ever known is raided by Vikings, forcing him and his family to move and start their lives anew in a small hamlet where he does not fit in。 。 。 。 A Norman noblewoman marries for love, following her husband across the sea to a new land, but the customs of her husband's homeland are shockingly different, and as she begins to realize that everyone around her is engaged in a constant, brutal battle for power, it becomes clear that a single misstep could be catastrophic。 。 。 。 A monk dreams of transforming his humble abbey into a center of learning that will be admired throughout Europe。 And each in turn comes into dangerous conflict with a clever and ruthless bishop who will do anything to increase his wealth and power。

Follett is truly a master。 His books are huge volumes of pages that turn quickly。 His stories are enticing, beautifully written and hugely enjoyed。

It was good so far as easy, entertaining fiction goes。 I read it quickly because I wanted to see what happened。 However, it didn't really have much to do with Saxons。 I thought it was going to be more historical, but it's really a book about interpersonal drama that could've been set in any era without a significant change to the plot。 And the characters felt very repetitive from Follett's other Kingsbridge books。 If possible, it's even smuttier than his previous books。 It really should be calle It was good so far as easy, entertaining fiction goes。 I read it quickly because I wanted to see what happened。 However, it didn't really have much to do with Saxons。 I thought it was going to be more historical, but it's really a book about interpersonal drama that could've been set in any era without a significant change to the plot。 And the characters felt very repetitive from Follett's other Kingsbridge books。 If possible, it's even smuttier than his previous books。 It really should be called "Rapey Saxons"。I preferred Wulf the Saxon by G。A。 Henty。 。。。more

This is my first 5 star review and it's much deserved。 I loved so many things about this book and would be nit-picking if to list complaints。 As always Ken Follett's characters are described so perfectly, that it crates a moving picture in your mind as you read it。 Their personality were real and relatable and I became attached to the characters and their lives。 The kindness and courage, the vile and evil, all made to feel real。 This is my first 5 star review and it's much deserved。 I loved so many things about this book and would be nit-picking if to list complaints。 As always Ken Follett's characters are described so perfectly, that it crates a moving picture in your mind as you read it。 Their personality were real and relatable and I became attached to the characters and their lives。 The kindness and courage, the vile and evil, all made to feel real。 。。。more

Just like the others, but still very enjoyable。

“Pillars” and “World without End” are masterpieces…。 “Column” didn’t measure up in my opinion, but with this prequel, Follett is back! The story was engaging, enraging, and exciting…

Loved the book。 True love lives on

I do love his stories and this was a good one。

SPOILER ALERTI had been looking forward to reading this for some time and I wasn’t disappointed。 I do like Ken Follett’s books - there’s always something happening and always great characters for whom I want everything to work out。I was surprised when Dreng’s Ferry was Re-named King’s Bridge - I should have worked that out for myself 500 pages previously!

A prequel to Ken Folet's series "pillars of the earth", gives us a glimpse of Kingsbridge before it acquired the bridge that gave it its name。 It is read mainly if you have read (or intend to read) the three books that were already written。It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages。 England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east。 Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king。 Without a clear ru A prequel to Ken Folet's series "pillars of the earth", gives us a glimpse of Kingsbridge before it acquired the bridge that gave it its name。 It is read mainly if you have read (or intend to read) the three books that were already written。It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages。 England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east。 Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king。 Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns。In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined。 A young boatbuilder's life is turned upside down when the only home he's ever known is raided by Vikings, forcing him and his family to move and start their lives anew in a small hamlet where he does not fit in。。。 A Norman noblewoman marries for love, following her husband across the sea to a new land, but the customs of her husband's homeland are shockingly different, and as she begins to realize that everyone around her is engaged in a constant, brutal battle for power, it becomes clear that a single misstep could be catastrophic。。。 A monk dreams of transforming his humble abbey into a center of learning that will be admired throughout Europe。 And each in turn comes into dangerous conflict with a clever and ruthless bishop who will do anything to increase his wealth and power。Thirty years ago, Ken Follett published his most popular (?) novel, The Pillars of the Earth。 Now, Follett's "The Evening and the Morning" takes the reader on an journey into a historical past that will end where The Pillars of the Earth begins。 。。。more

As usual in KF's books, I feel slightly patronised by being reminded of details as if I will have forgotten, but love rollicking along with the story。 This partnered well with some other recent reading and viewing I have done about this period in Britain and nearby。 As usual in KF's books, I feel slightly patronised by being reminded of details as if I will have forgotten, but love rollicking along with the story。 This partnered well with some other recent reading and viewing I have done about this period in Britain and nearby。 。。。more

This is nowhere near the spectacular level of intricate writing that Follett gave us with the two first books of the series。 The characters are much more shallow, the plotline is approaching dull, and could someone, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, please make the rich, old white guy not rape every heroine and half the other female characters of this series? To read his version of it, sexual assault, even when it happens continuously over a long period of time, results in children that then end up being murdered, or threatened to be taken away if she refuses to marry her rapist, is still just mostly a minor inconvenience to further along the plot。 If this is the best way he can think of to spice up an already fairly dull plotline, could someone please stop the man from writing another book? I am genuinely nausiated after reading this utter crap。 。。。more

I loved this book。 Great story and could not put it down。 The story takes place between 997 and 1006。 Interesting time period。 The author said that there is not much known about this time period but he pulled together a great tale and gave some sense of the times。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I am inclined to give it two stars, but as Kenneth, called Ken, kept me reading I will give it a bonus star。So why three (actually two)? The plot is simple and thin, the sex is usually unnecessary, and the story could have been told vividly in half the pages。 It mainly takes place in three places: Combe, the Shiring and Dreng's Ferry, and characters of significance can be counted on two hands, which is not a lot for an 800 paged historical novel。 Now, I may be considered a literary snob, but eve I am inclined to give it two stars, but as Kenneth, called Ken, kept me reading I will give it a bonus star。So why three (actually two)?

The prequel to ‘Pillars of the Earth’, this book takes us back to the year 997 when Kingsbridge was a hamlet of 3 or 4 houses, a run down church and no bridge, Dreng’s Ferry。It was nice to be back into the quaintness of village and small town life after the rollercoaster ride through political history in the vast panorama of ‘Column of Fire’。As per the others in the series, this is a long book, 800+ pages。 It is a et in the ‘Dark Ages’, but follows Ken Follett’s usual plot of poor artisan who ma The prequel to ‘Pillars of the Earth’, this book takes us back to the year 997 when Kingsbridge was a hamlet of 3 or 4 houses, a run down church and no bridge, Dreng’s Ferry。It was nice to be back into the quaintness of village and small town life after the rollercoaster ride through political history in the vast panorama of ‘Column of Fire’。As per the others in the series, this is a long book, 800+ pages。 It is a et in the ‘Dark Ages’, but follows Ken Follett’s usual plot of poor artisan who makes good and loves the rich heroine, and thoroughly nasty men in authority。 So, in many ways it is similar to PotE and the second book in the series (3rd chronologically) ‘World without End’, but set in a different era。 Nevertheless, it was a good read。 The historical perspectives were interesting, but I wish someone more descriptive than Ken Follett, such as CJ Samson, had written it。Between 3。5 and 4 stars 。。。more

Dear author, repeat after me: Rape is not a plot device。 Female characters do not need to be raped for character development to happen。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Este libro cuenta una historia interesante que atrapa al lector。 Lo que me gusta de esta saga de libros es que no importa en que orden la leas, yo compré primero "Un Mundo Sin Fin" y luego de terminarlo supe que era una saga。 A diferencia con "Un Mundo Sin Fin" que me costó enganchar la historia hasta pasadas las primeras 150 páginas, con "Las tinieblas y el alba" fue distinto。 Me enganchó rapido y me mantuvo interesada toda la historia (supongo que porque ya conocía el estilo del autor) aunque Este libro cuenta una historia interesante que atrapa al lector。 Lo que me gusta de esta saga de libros es que no importa en que orden la leas, yo compré primero "Un Mundo Sin Fin" y luego de terminarlo supe que era una saga。 A diferencia con "Un Mundo Sin Fin" que me costó enganchar la historia hasta pasadas las primeras 150 páginas, con "Las tinieblas y el alba" fue distinto。 Me enganchó rapido y me mantuvo interesada toda la historia (supongo que porque ya conocía el estilo del autor) aunque sentí que al final me faltó un poco más, el autor tenía buen material para profundizar en ciertas partes de al final y solo las cortó y siguió concluyendo。 Me encanta como Follett juega con los tabúes, y transmite siempre lo que es la libertad de amar y cuanto puede reprimir las normas sociales este sentimiento。 Yo también me enamoré de Edgar, un personaje con el espíritu tan noble que incluso yo confiaba ciegamente en las desiciones que tomaría。 Personalmente divido el libro en dos partes, la primera parte fue muy pausada, algo descriptiva y a veces demasiado lenta, pero confiaba en los desenlaces que me iba presentando el autor。 Ya llegando al final de la primera mitad pensé: "esta historia está buena, empezó muy fuerte y violenta y ahora no está pasando nada, en serio los personajes pasaron por tanto para terminar en cotilleo de pueblo?"。 Pero luego la segunda mitad se aceleró mucho el curso de los acontecimientos, tanto asi que lo sentí vertiginoso。 Cuando matan a Wilwulf de ahí para adelante creo que fue demasiado rápido, y no es como si el autor no tuviera espacio。 Ragna es como Caris, fuerte e independiente; me dió mucha lastima cuando la ví doblegada y temerosa, mi espíritu de mujer se quebrantó con ella。 El hecho de que la ambientación sea en el año mil da el pase para que el escritor juegue con las moralidades y las normas sociales, que se ven no estar tan claras o que se las pasaban por el tuje, pero ya en el final mas o menos sentí que era tanta fantasía que parecía cuento de hadas。 Toda la violencia que sufrió Ragna me impactó bastante, soñé con ella cuando leí que la violaban, se embarazaba, la obligaban a dar a luz y la torturaban con su hijo。 Es un libro bueno, ligero, pero el precio (en Chile y Argentina) está muy elevado para lo que este libro ofrece。 。。。more
